Who We Are & What We Do
Reach Out and Read at St. Christopher's was started in 2001 by two St. Chris pediatricians. St. Christopher's Hospital for Children is a nonprofit located in North Philadelphia that takes care of the highest percentage of Medicaid patients than any other stand alone pediatric hospital in the country.
Mission
To address the growing need for books in children's homes in our community, our pediatricians "prescribe" age-appropriate books and at-home reading to children at their Well Visits. Each child is given a book to take home and read with their families.
Impact
Every dollar donated to Reach Out and Read at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children goes directly to buy books for children in our community. The simple act of giving a book to a child and encouraging parents to read to their children has been validated in numerous studies, showing that families that read together have larger vocabularies, stronger language skills, and are better prepared to succeed in school.
